Maternity Mentoring Toolkits: Accelerating Impact of Philosophical and Psychological Research to Improve Perinatal Employee Support and Communication.
Study Title: Maternity Mentoring Toolkits: Accelerating Impact of Philosophical and Psychological Research to Improve Perinatal Employee Support and Communication (MaMeT) Researchers: Fiona Woollard, Alexandra Kent, Serena Williams, Jo McManus and Ruth Pullen University email: [email protected] Ethics/ERGO no: 86817 Data collection end date: June 2024
, The MaMeT project is a collaboration between researchers at the Universities of Southampton and Keele and local business maternity mentoring business bump & glide.
We aim to improve the experiences of those returning to work after giving birth and help tackle inequality in the workplace.
Pregnancy and early motherhood/parenthood is always a time of transition and commonly associated with a loss of confidence, self-esteem and sense-of-self. Parenthood often has a significant impact on women's careers, with a reduction of earnings of about 45% over their careers compared to the earnings of childless women. bump & glide offer a '360 degree' approach with covering the pivotal time in between pregnancy and the return to work. Fiona Woollard, Philosophy, Southampton and Alexandra Kent, Psychology, Keele, will work with bump & glide to further enhance their maternity mentoring toolkits.
The resulting research-based toolkit will be field tested at the University of Southampton. The field test will be supported by co-Investigators Ruth Pullen and Jo McManus from the School of Healthcare, Enterprise and Innovation.
As part of this stage of the project, eligible employees at the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Faculty of Social Science and Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences at the University of Southampton will be able to benefit from a free course of maternity mentoring.
We hope this project will provide evidence of the benefits of maternity mentoring, encouraging more businesses to offer this kind of support to their employees.
Now recruiting! The field-test of the improved toolkits is under way and we are looking for participants for the intervention group.
